School Board Posts Transcript to Settle Open Meeting Complaint
So-called open meeting laws requiring governmental bodies to deliberate in public about official business, instead of behind closed doors, are common throughout the U.S. And so are violations, perhaps because it can be difficult to enforce such laws.
Members of one suburban Chicago school board, however, are reminded of one such incident every time they log onto the district’s website, reports the Daily Herald.
That’s because, under a settlement with the Lake County state’s attorney’s office, the website for the Prairie Crossing Charter School in Grayslake will be featuring, through April, transcripts of a board conversation last summer that violated the state Open Meetings Act, the newspaper reports.
Board President Geoff Deigan said the violation was unintentional, and represented only a small portion of a 45-minute meeting.
