Justice Antonin Scalia

Justice Antonin Scalia.

One of Justice Antonin Scalia’s sons, a Catholic priest, presided at the justice’s funeral Mass on Saturday.

Vice President Joe Biden attended the Mass along with 10 of 11 current and retired justices on the court, report the Associated Press and the Washington Post.

President Obama did not attend, indicating that the decision was a “respectful arrangement” due to the president’s large security detail and Biden’s personal relationship with Scalia. Retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, 85 is “in frail health” and was unable to attend, according to the Post.

Scalia’s wife, Maureen, his eight other children and dozens of grandchildren also attended the service.

The Rev. Paul Scalia told the crowd that they were gathered because of one man. “A man known personally to many of us, known only by reputation to even more. A man loved by many, scorned by others. A man known for great controversy and for great compassion.

“That man, of course, is Jesus of Nazareth. It is he who we proclaim.”
