Russian Hacker Apologizes, Gets Probation in $10M Raid on Scottish Bank
A 27-year-old Russian man who participated in a hack attack on a Scottish bank that eventually netted some $10 million from 2,000 ATMs has been sentenced to probation by a Siberian court.
Yevgeny Anikin, who apologized for his role in the crime, also was given a five-year suspended sentence and told to make restitution for his unspecified share of the swag, reports the Telegraph.
It says the group hacked into RBS Worldpay, a payment processing arm of the bank, and increased cash advance limits on counterfeit credit cards to as much as $500,000. Then, in a coordinated 12-hour attack, mules were sent to 2,000 cash machines with the cards and stolen PINs to withdraw the money.
Anikin was arrested in 2009. By that point he had reportedly purchased two apartments and a car with stolen funds.
