Keep-off-the-grass signs at a Texas courthouse really meant business this week: Rattlesnakes had been spotted basking in the sun on the lawn near tall ornamental grass.

Photos taken by attorneys and others show some of the snakes in the grass at the Galveston County Courthouse were at least a foot long, according to the Associated Press and the Galveston County Daily News (sub. req.).

No one has been bitten by any of the poisonous reptiles, and court officials are trying to safeguard visitors with special rattlesnake warning signs posted this week. They also state: “Do not walk through the grass. Remain on concrete walkways. Do not leave children unattended.”

New landscaping options are reportedly under consideration.
