An Indiana prosecutor is on a campaign to get movies rated for mature audiences removed from video kiosks such as Redbox.

Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Stan Levco of Evansville says it’s too easy for children to rent adult-oriented movies at the kiosks, which dispense movies with the swipe of a credit card, according to WISH-TV and the Evansville Courier & Press. He says retailers with the kiosks may be violating an Indiana law that prevents the distribution of harmful material to minors.

Levco’s office has sent a letter to local businesses warning that, within the next few weeks, the sheriff will begin checking to make sure the offending videos are gone.

The letter didn’t confine its criticism to R-rated movies, according to the Courier & Press. “We suggest that the machine or machines dispensing these materials at your location no longer provide access to videos, movies, games, etc., which contain an R rating, PG-13 rating, or unrated or are for mature audiences,” it said.

Levco told the Courier & Press that the letter has generated responses from several corporate lawyers, and he won’t be making decisions about whether to prosecute for a couple weeks.
