A proposal to ban most, but not all, leaf-blowing in a South Florida city has generated lots of noise from irate citizens.

While some in Coral Gables welcome the green initiative, which is intended to reduce not only the racket from the machines but the mold spores and chemicals they help spread, many others see the idea as an issue of excessive government oversight, reports the Miami Herald.

“I don’t know a single neighbor or homeowner in the Gables who doesn’t use a leaf blower to maintain his property in the pristine manner that is required by code,” says resident Jon Goldman, who has spearheaded a citizen e-mail campaign against the initiative. “This is a clear case of over-regulation and government gone wild.”

The proposed ban would exempt city workers and allow homeowners to use electric-powered leaf blowers.
