Outgoing ABA President Stephen N. Zack updated members on the status of his presidency’s key initiatives in his farewell address today to the policy-making House of Delegates at the Annual Meeting in Toronto.
Each of the entities discussed by Zack, which include the Task Force on the Preservation of the Justice System, Commission on Civic Education in the Nation’s Schools, Commission on Disaster Response and Preparedness, and the Commission on Hispanic Legal Rights and Responsibilities, have recommendations that will be considered by the House at this meeting.
Zack also shared good news on membership and revenue.
“I’m proud to report that we have stabilized our membership,” Zack said.
Current membership numbers stand at about 381,500 members, which—although a 1.2 percent decline from 2010—is 1.4 percent above initial predictions, according to a report from ABA Executive Director Jack Rives.
Zack also lauded the ABA’s willingness to “get in the way” on controversial issues.
“We must continue to get in the way of all those who want to close our courts and stand up for the rest of American as is our obligation to do,” he said.
