Posner Blasts Asylum Courts, Calls for Judicial Conference
Long a critic of “inadequate” and “ill-trained” asylum courts, the 7th Circuit’s Richard Posner reportedly offered up some remedies in a speech Monday.
“This is a system of adjudication that is clearly inadequate,” Posner told a Chicago Bar Association audience.
The National Law Journal (sub. req.) reports that Posner called for a judicial conference on his and others’ concerns about how inconsistently asylum laws are applied.
Posner also told the crowd that Bureau of Immigration Appeals judges need better training, especially on international issues that they will likely need to consider. Law schools could also help by offering more clinics to improve the quality of the asylum bar.
