Plaintiffs lawyers contend that long-term use of denture cream can lead to zinc buildup in the body and neurological problems.

A dozen cases targeting the makers of PoliGrip and Fixodent for their zinc ingredient are pending in federal courts in eight states, lawyers told the National Law Journal. And dozens of other cases are in the pipeline, they say.

Scott William Weinstein of the Fort Myers, Fla., law firm Morgan & Morgan told the publication that his firm is ready to file about 40 cases and is screening around 3,000 others. He said he is also working with a New York law firm and a Sacramento, Calif., law firm which collectively have another 75 cases.

He has filed a motion to consolidate the cases pending in federal courts.

Updated at 5:03 p.m. to indicate that one Morgan & Morgan partner firm is from California.

Another plaintiffs lawyer, James Sokolove, has set up a consumer hotline to screen possible cases and has posted a YouTube video about the dangers of dental cream, the story says.

Procter & Gamble said in a statement that Fixodent is “generally recognized as safe in the amounts used.”

“Zinc is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter products, a variety of foods and is a vital part of our daily diet,” P&G said. “In fact, zinc supplements are commonly sold.”
