Philadelphia courts are putting news and announcements on Twitter, an online service that allows users to communicate in brief updates.

As of last week, only 18 people were following court news from the 1st Judicial District on Twitter, the Legal Intelligencer reports. Users can obtain Twitter updates through text messages on their cell phones, by e-mail or by logging on to Twitter.com. The court also used the service to inform users about the court’s safe surrender program held in September for fugitives with no history of violence.

Twitter was conceived as a way for friends, family and co-workers to send constant, short updates about what they are doing at the moment. But it is being used in other contexts, including legal ones.

A Wichita newspaper reporter covering a murder trial posted news updates on Twitter. Several lawyers and legal professionals also use the service. Law blogger Adrian Lurssen has listed several of them. The ABA Journal’s daily news feed is also available on Twitter.
