Perkins Coie associate Zachary Newkirk will appear in Jeopardy!’s tournament of champions later this year after winning six games.

Newkirk, 31, won four times early last year before COVID-19 travel restrictions paused his appearances, Bloomberg Law reports. He won two more times when he returned for show tapings in December.

Newkirk’s winnings totaled $124,871 when he lost his seventh match in a show that aired Feb. 1. During his first appearances, Alex Trebek was the host. Newkirk returned after Trebek’s death for shows hosted by former record-breaking champion Ken Jennings.

Newkirk is a graduate of the Duke University School of Law and a former law clerk for Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker of the Northern District of Florida. When he was clerking, “those of us in the office would sometimes shout out the answers if Jeopardy! was on,” he told Bloomberg Law.

At Perkins Coie, Newkirk works on voting rights litigation with partner Marc Elias.

Jeopardy! was more calming compared to dealing with high-stakes voting rights issues,” Newkirk told Bloomberg Law.
