Eager for lucrative energy work, global law firms and boutiques alike are flocking to Western Pennsylvania’s enormous Marcellus Shale natural gas reserve.

Previously unattainable, new large-scale drilling technology has made it possible to tap these reserves in central and western Pennsylvania that beckon firms with a significant presence in the energy industry to take advantage of what has been called “this century’s gold rush,” according to a recent Hildebrandt Institute blog post.

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney opened an office in the Southpointe area of Cannonsburg, Pa., in September; Houston-based Burleson now boasts 30 lawyers in its office there. Steptoe & Johnson opened a second office in the region in December 2010, and Fulbright & Jaworski opened a new office in Southpointe this year.
