Patton Boggs has hired a search firm to look for a new chief operating officer after COO Ira Fishman left to become managing director of the NFL Players Association.

Fishman is one of several Patton Boggs lawyers who left to join the association, the Am Law Daily reports, summarizing a National Law Journal story. DeMaurice Smith left six months ago to become executive director of the players union, and two associates left for union jobs earlier this year.

The union became one of Patton Boggs’ lobbying clients three months ago, the story says. The Alexander Group is handling the search process; the job doesn’t have to be filled by a lawyer.
