Passersby douse courthouse flames with building fire extinguishers; police seek arson suspect
A Thursday morning fire at a courthouse on Hawaii’s Big Island had already been doused by passersby with fire extinguishers by the time police and firefighters arrived.
But an investigation is now underway to determine who is responsible for the arson at or near the doorway of Kona’s drug court, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and West Hawaii Today.
Police are seeking a male suspect wearing board shorts and hoodie who fled the scene in a pickup truck. The Star-Advertiser article has photos of both the suspect and the truck, which were taken by courthouse security cameras and provided to the newspaper by police.
Two employees were in the courthouse at the time of the blaze, shortly before 7 a.m., but were not injured.
