Online Video Clipping Service is Sued, Suspends Service
An Internet company that served as a platform for individuals interested in searching television and radio broadcasts, creating video clips, embedding them on websites and sharing them with others has closed down that portion of its services, after being sued by two major media organizations.
Although Redlasso is shutting down its beta site following the suit by NBC Universal and Fox Television Stations, the company will continue to offer its services to companies that use Redlasso technology to search video clips for internal use and radio stations that want to upload clips for use by others, reports Broadcasting & Cable
The article also says that Redlasso hopes to negotiate with broadcasters to resolve the issue so that it can continue offering its video clipping service to a broader clientele.
The copyright infringement lawsuit against Redlasso was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, reports the Dow Jones news service.
The company apparently plans to defend the case on fair-use grounds, according to Reuters: “Clip usage by bloggers is an exercise of First Amendment rights to provide social commentary on newsworthy events,” says Ken Hayward, Redlasso’s chief executive, in a written statement.
