Online Social Networking Lessons for Lawyers
Updated: If you don’t know what online social networking is, let alone LinkedIn and Plaxo, you’re surely not unique among the legal profession.
But you need to know, says Robert Ambrogi in Law Technology News. And Facebook, he contends, isn’t just for the nonlawyer teenagers and 20-somethings amongst us.
“For all their hype, social networking websites are just glorified directories—the 21st Century version of the phone book or the legal directory,” he writes “But unlike their forebearers, these directories give you far more control, helping you tailor your listing and manage your network in ways no traditional directory ever could.”
Although these sites aren’t yet ubiquitous, especially among professionals, now is the time to join and establish a high profile among potential clients who share similar interests before everyone else does so, Ambrogi says in an article that compares the relative benefits, to a lawyer, of membership in the different sites, and how to maximize them.
He plans in a subsequent article to explore social networking options on sites that cater specifically to professionals.
