Ohio Courthouse Has Big ‘Economic Orbit’
What do an Ohio courthouse and a Subway sandwich shop have in common? The restaurant feeds off the courthouse, according to a story that examines the economic impact of a busy Columbus courthouse.
Businesses “act as satellites in the courthouse’s economic orbit,” and they will continue to do so when the court is replaced by a nearby building, reports Columbus Business First. Hot dog vendors are so eager for a spot in front of the courthouse entrance that they compete in an auction every two weeks. The vendors can earn as much as $120 in one lunch hour, while the Subway reports 150 to 200 customers a day.
Other businesses that thrive on courthouse business include a bail bonds company, a courier service and hotels where lawyers stay during long cases. Parking meters near the courthouse took in nearly $124,000 last year.
