President Obama has backed a compromise that would end the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military after a study is completed.

The study assessing the impact on troops would have to be done by Dec. 1, according to the Washington Post and the New York Times. The repeal would then take place after the president certifies the repeal would not harm military readiness.

It’s unclear whether the compromise has enough votes to pass, the stories say.

Under the current “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, gays can remain in the military only if they keep their sexual orientation a secret.
