Lawyer and journalist Adam Liptak has been named the new U.S. Supreme Court reporter for the venerable New York Times.

He takes the place of Linda Greenhouse, who covered the high court for 30 years, and accepted a $300,000 buyout in February.

Liptak, who joined the NYT newsroom in 2002, was previously a lawyer for the paper, the New York Observer notes in its coverage of Liptak’s new post. His Times bio is here.

The Observer quotes from a memo by Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet that details Liptak’s contributions to the Times. “Adam has covered the Valerie Wilson case and the Supreme Court nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito. He has roamed the country bringing life to musty legal cases and fights over judicial ethics, and produced major projects on the criminal justice system.”

In addition to his news coverage, Liptak has written a legal column, Sidebar. Liptak will move to the Washington, D.C., area with his wife and two children “later this year” to take the job, the memo states.
