NY Lawyer Navigates Dating on the Cheap
Lori Weiss, a 29-year-old New York lawyer, makes more money than a lot of her dates, but she tries not to show it.
She hides shopping bags and quickly clips the price tags off new clothes so her dates won’t feel threatened by the income disparity, the New York Times reports.
“A lot of guys don’t want to admit they have a problem with it,” she told the Times. “They don’t want to be ‘that guy.’ But I think it’s ingrained.”
Weiss is among the women negotiating the world of dating in a city where women in her age group make more money than men.
A recent study found that women in their 20s working full-time in the city take home median paychecks that are 17 percent higher than those of men. The trend, which includes women lawyers, is creating uncomfortable dating situations, the Times says.
Some men are put off by women who make more money than them. And some women don’t want to pick up the check all the time or have problems when men aren’t the primary breadwinner.
Weiss recalls one lower-paid boyfriend who didn’t like her to pick up the tab on dates. Their solution: The couple stayed home rather than going out.
