New York has agreed to a settlement that restricts its use of solitary confinement for mentally ill inmates.

The agreement provides for better assessment and more services for such inmates, and reviews of the decisions to place them in solitary confinement, the New York Times reports.

A federal judge will review the settlement on Friday.

New York is one of several states that have been sued over its means of disciplining of mentally ill prisoners.
