A former fashion writer has been sentenced to a minimum of 18 years in prison for raping a colleague.

Peter Braunstein made his first public statement about the crime before he was sentenced. He said the crime was motivated by “irrationality” and mentioned severe depression, the New York Times reports.

The statement did not express any remorse for the victim, according to columnist Andrea Peyser of the New York Post. She wrote that Braunstein appeared at the hearing in “a freshly buzzed crewcut and in a gray shirt that still bore package creases.”

Braunstein’s lawyers had contended their client was schizophrenic. They showed jurors a PET scan of their client’s brain and called a psychiatrist to testify who said the test showed evidence of the disease.
