New Legal Drama Premieres
Glenn Close consulted an acting coach to help her play a lawyer in a new legal drama on FX premiering today.
The new show is a serialized legal thriller with the provocative name Damages.
Close told the Los Angeles Times she was uncomfortable because the television series has no predetermined beginning, middle and end.
Acting coach Harold Guskin advised Close to view the series as “kind of like life: you just live the moment, and you’re up for whatever the writers give you.”
Close says she relishes her role as Patty Hewes, a ruthless Manhattan litigator. “Ultimately, the chance to play a character like this at my age, a woman in power, is kind of rare,” she told the newspaper.
Newsday praises Close’s “canny subtlety” in the series.
“She gives stirring speeches about her crusading good works,” Newsday says. “Then she slices and dices a longtime cohort so thoroughly, so suddenly, that you half expect to be hit next with a boiled bunny out of Fatal Attraction.”
