Michael Mukasey has indicated he is likely to impose new rules to insulate the Justice Department from political influence if he is confirmed in hearings that begin today, the New York Times reports.

Mukasey emerged from meetings with key senators yesterday with pledges of support, the Associated Press reports. Besides assuring them that he could stand up to the White House, Mukasey also said he would review wiretap and interrogation techniques for terrorism suspects.

“I expect him to be confirmed,” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who will preside over the hearings. “I want him to succeed.”
