Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson will serve only one day in jail after his guilty plea in September to drug possession and driving under the influence.

The 41-year-old Tyson was sentenced today to 10 days, but will only have to serve one day. He will also be required to perform community service, reports Reuters.

The prosecution had argued for a longer sentence, pointing to Tyson’s previous record and violent past. The defense said he deserved a break for admitting his addictions and obtaining treatment. In addition to a three-year prison term for a 1992 rape conviction, he also served time after pleading no contest in 1999 to two misdemeanor Maryland assault charges.

“If you do good deeds and you help other people recover, alternatives to imprisonment are the better route,” said Tyson’s lawyer, David Chesnoff, outside of court.
