Michigan State agrees to $500M settlement with victims of Larry Nassar

Michigan State University has reached a $500 million settlement with 332 victims of Larry Nassar, a former sports doctor for the university who was sentenced to prison for sexually molesting gymnasts and other athletes during medical treatments.
The settlement was announced Wednesday in a suit that had accused Michigan State of failing to protect the victims from Nassar’s abuse, report the Associated Press, the Washington Post, the Lansing State Journal, the Detroit Free Press, MLive.com and the New York Times. The agreement in principle still needs to be finalized.
The settlement calls for a payment of $425 million to the 332 victims. The remaining $75 million will be set aside for victims who come forward in the future. The agreement settles claims against the university and people associated with the university.
Nassar was accused of molesting girls and women as a doctor at Michigan State and for USA Gymnastics, which is still facing a suit over the abuse. The U.S. Olympic Committee, the Twistars gymnastics club and former Olympic coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi have also been sued.
