Massive Colo. Gang Sweep, Football Murder Tie
Authorities in Denver conducted a massive sweep at dawn today and arrested dozens of alleged street gang members. The case reportedly involved extensive wiretapping and has developed information concerning the Jan. 1 drive-by murder of a professional football player.
Today’s sweep, conducted by federal and local law enforcement, was the culmination of an 18-month grand jury investigation into drug trafficking, according to news reports. Among 49 people reportedly arrested yesterday under five separate indictments was Brian Hicks, an alleged gang member whose SUV has been linked to the unsolved Jan. 1 drive-by slaying of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams. Hicks was in jail at the time, and today’s indictments do not address the murder.
Authorities said they seized more than $1 million in cash and 85 kilos of cocaine in the raid.
