Man with concealed-carry permit accused of using gun butt to drive thumbtack at elementary school
Jeffrey Kyle Grubbs had a concealed-carry permit for his handgun.
But the 45-year-old Missouri man is nonetheless facing two felony charges for allegedly using his firearm as a hammer Monday at a Benton elementary school while he drove a thumbtack into a wood plaque, reports the Southeast Missourian.
Grubbs was volunteering for a 4-H club project, with his own children and other children present, when he took out his gun, grabbed the barrel and used the butt to drive the thumbtack, according to a probable cause statement by the Scott County sheriff’s department.
Detective Darrin Sides wrote that the gun was initially loaded (Grubbs said he unloaded it before he finished driving the thumbtack); however, no bullet was chambered at the time.
Under state law, a school official must provide consent for a gun to be brought onto school property, the article says.
Grubbs was arrested Tuesday and charged with unlawful use of a weapon and child endangerment, then released on a criminal summons.
The Associated Press attempted without success to reach a lawyer representing Grubbs for comment.
