A former client has sued Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges, claiming the law firm failed to advise him of the potential ramifications of a settlement with a former business partner.

According to the complaint by ex-client Todd Kurtin, he was supposed to receive nearly $49 million in four payments under the settlement agreement, but he never received the last two installments, the American Lawyer reports. The law firm took its $12 million contingency out of the first payment, the suit says.

The complaint, filed earlier this month in Los Angeles superior court, claims Quinn Emanuel failed to advise Kurtin of “the meaning and ramifications of all terms of the settlement agreement,” the story says. Kurtin claims he is still owed nearly $23 million under the settlement.

Quinn Emanuel partner Ken Chiate told the American Lawyer the firm believes the lawsuit “is totally without merit. It reflects someone who is unhappy and has decided to exercise his right to seek remedies which we believe are totally inappropriate and will be defeated at trial.”
