When Janet Stewart joined Lerners, in London, nearly 40 years ago, she was one of seven lawyers there. Today, the law firm has 100 attorneys in London and Toronto, and she is managing partner.

Lerners has long since gotten used to making do with smaller-than-optimum space, but moved this week into posh new offices in a $12.5 million, 50,000-square-foot four-story building at 85 Dufferin Ave., reports the London Free Press. The new offices will house about half of the firm’s 70 lawyers in London. The others will work elsewhere, in soon-to-be-renovated space.

“We probably let this go way too long. Only the promise of a new building kept our staff reasonably sane,” says Stewart. However, the founders never dreamed the firm would grow to this size, she adds. “I’ve watched all of this with some amazement, but business is becoming bigger and more sophisticated and you need more lawyers.”
