A Wisconsin lawyer who served as the state’s gaming chief counsel had some hefty commuting costs for his 140-mile trips between Chicago and Madison.

But the lawyer, Michael McClure, didn’t have to pay. The state of Wisconsin reimbursed him, paying him more than $61,000 for mileage, hotels and meals since January 2003, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The Associated Press has a different figure and time period; the wire service says McClure was paid at least $67,000 in reimbursements since 2002.

The state ended the reimbursements a week after an audit revealed the costs. McClure’s salary is $109,000 a year and he oversees the agency that contracts with tribes that run casinos.

The audit had said McClure’s costs were less than that of contracting with an outside firm to do the job.
