How do the states stack up? Lawyers make the most and least money in these areas

Lawyers make the lowest average salary in Montana and the highest average salary in California, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Forbes analyzed the data and created a list of states with the highest and lowest average salaries.

These states are the top five for average lawyer salaries:

• California: $171,550

• New York: $167,110

• Massachusetts: $165,610

• Connecticut: $153,640

• Illinois: $152,980

These states are the bottom five:

• Montana: $88,600

• Mississippi: $97,990

• West Virginia: $98,630

• Arkansas: $98,780

• Idaho: $99,360
