In the latest penalty assessed in an ongoing series attorney discipline cases resulting from a controversial secret settlement in a Detroit police whistleblower case, the lawyer who represented then-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was given a 179-day license suspension today by the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board.

However, such penalties are normally stayed during an appeal process that could go to the Michigan Supreme Court, so attorney Samuel McCargo will likely retain his law practice privileges for some time and could see the penalty reduced, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The board also assessed costs of over $35,000 against McCargo.
