A former assistant for a Virginia lawyer faces federal accusations that she embezzled thousands of dollars from an estate he was handling.

Shelia Mae Boone is accused of forging checks for more than $270,000 from estate funds, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. She is charged with two counts of bank fraud and one of aggravated identity theft.

Boone worked for lawyer Harvey Latney Jr. of Richmond, who is also a part-time commonwealth’s attorney for Caroline County. Authorities said he was “totally taken aback” when he learned about the missing money.
