Lawyer Loses Briefcase--and Sensitive Iraq War Documents
In the latest of a series of embarrassing incidents concerning the British government’s loss of confidential information, a solicitor with a well-known United Kingdom law firm apparently had his briefcase stolen as he was riding a commuter train to work yesterday.
In the stolen case was a set of highly sensitive Ministry of Defense documents concerning the Iraq War that the unnamed solicitor had received in the course of his work at Eversheds. The law firm had been retained by the Treasury Solicitor’s Department, which does legal work for central government offices, reports the London Times.
The solicitor couldn’t fit the briefcase into the train’s overhead compartment, so he stowed it in a baggage rack at the end of the carriage, the newspaper writes. When the lawyer got to the King’s Cross station in London, he realized it had gone missing and called police.
