A new wave of online dating services is cropping up, and former government lawyer Willa Bernstein is among those giving one of them a try.

Bernstein, who now heads the philanthropy company Manthropy, was too intimidated to cross the room to speak with a man she was making eyes with recently at the Soho Grand Hotel, the New York Times reports. So she had a friend walk over to him and leave a card on Bernstein’s behalf that read, “I’m looking forward to our first date.”

The card from a company called Cheek’d directed the man to the Cheekd.com website where he could use an identification number to send a message to Bernstein, the Times says. Users such as Bernsein pay $25 to post information about themselves and get a pack of cards with sayings such as, “Look up. You might miss something,” and, “I am totally cooler than your date.”

FlipMe! is another dating company that is similar to Cheek’d. Other companies link singles through tracking technology on their cell phones, the story says.

Bernstein’s attempt at a match has shown some initial success, the Times reports. The man left her a message on Cheekd.com that read, “My only regret from last night was that you didn’t come over and introduce yourself in person.”
