Country pop star Jimmy Wayne has agreed to hold a benefit concert this weekend for abused and homeless youths because of an invitation from a fan—Fairfax, Va., estate lawyer Kimberley Murphy.

The Washington Post reports that the lawyer became acquainted with Wayne through a TV report and a letter.

Murphy saw a story on television about Wayne’s troubled childhood, in which he endured abuse and homelessness and spent time in foster care. She wrote to express her admiration and included one of her father’s military pins. Wayne called Murphy personally to thank her.

When Murphy’s alumni association was looking for a community service project, Murphy suggested inviting Wayne to talk about his experiences. He not only agreed, he suggested bringing his guitar.

The concert this weekend will benefit Alternative House, a shelter for abused and homeless teens in Falls Church, Va., and the Department of Social Services in Cleveland County, N.C.
