Lawyer faces federal fraud case in claimed $7M straw-purchaser auto loan scheme
A New Jersey lawyer is among four individuals facing federal charges in a claimed $7 million scheme to use 20 straw buyers to obtain personal auto loans for 200 vehicles that actually were leased by the defendants to livery drivers.
Former Hoboken city councilman Christopher Campos, 39, faces bank and wire fraud and conspiracy charges in a criminal complaint. It alleges that Campos recruited at least a few straw buyers for the scheme, which took place in the New York City area in 2012 and 2013, and was present when false statements were made concerning some loan documents.
The Bergen Record, the Hudson Reporter and the Hoboken Patch have stories. They do not include any comment from Campos or his counsel.
A news release by the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York provides more details about the Manhattan case.
