Lawyer and Staff Layoffs at Baker Botts
Baker Botts had hoped that a hiring freeze imposed last year would avert potential law firm layoffs.
But now they have become necessary, the firm says in an internal memo circulated today: “The recession has been so deep and long-lasting … that we regrettably have also had to reduce our lawyer and staff levels through selective layoffs, particularly in those areas most impacted by the reduction in demand.”
Firm spokesman Mike Cinelli confirms that the memo text posted by Above the Law is accurate. (He makes no such representation concerning the overall ATL post, and notes that Baker Botts did not provide the internal memo to the law blog.)
However, he declines to specify the number of layoffs being made. “We’re not going to get into a numbers game; these are people we’re talking about,” he tells the ABA Journal.
Above the Law says about 30 lawyers at Baker Botts will be laid off, relying on information from unnamed sources.
