An instrument-rated California lawyer and pilot died Friday when his four-passenger Cessna 182 crashed and burned shortly after takeoff in Susanville, near the Nevada border.

Harold Gartner III was alone in the plane and it was snowing heavily at the time, according to the Lassen County Times.

Steve Datema, who serves as manager of the Susanville Airport, tells the newspaper that the Federal Aviation Administration told him that the plane apparently went into a stall spin. An investigation is continuing.

A 1972 graduate of Loyola Law School, Gartner had represented the county of Los Angeles and the regents of the University of California. He worked in the law offices of Eugene Chittock.
