New England Law Boston dean announced that school has recovered $173,000 embezzled by the school’s former controller in an email to students and staff on Friday.

Although Dean John F. O’Brien didn’t specify how the funds were obtained, the news came one day after Douglas Leman, who had worked at the law school for 17 years, pleaded guilty in federal court to creating 68 false checks payable to him or his wife, the Boston Globe reports.

New England Law Boston has put additional safeguards in place to protect against theft and to improve fiscal management overall, O’Brien wrote in the e-mail, according to the Globe. O’Brien called Leman’s action an “isolated incident.”

Leman is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 13.
