Law Prof Who Raised Awareness of ALS Dies from the Disease
Brigham Young University law professor Michael Goldsmith has died of respiratory failure from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the disease he wrote about in a Newsweek column.
Goldsmith was 58, the New York Times reports. In the Newsweek column, Goldsmith challenged Major League Baseball to fight ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Responding to the call, MLB held a fundraiser on July 4, the anniversary of Gehrig’s farewell speech.
Goldsmith wrote this e-mail to the New York Times in June: “I have spent more than two decades exhorting law students to take a proactive ‘can do’ approach to the law and life in general. And I have tried to lead by example, showing them how creativity and commitment to a cause can produce positive results. The success of this effort demonstrates yet again how ‘the power of one’ can make a difference.”
