Pepperdine law professor Douglas Kmiec, the U.S. ambassador to Malta, crashed his car in California on Thursday, killing a nun who was a passenger.

Kmiec suffered moderate injuries and another passenger, a pastor, was also injured, according to stories by the Los Angeles Daily News, the Los Angeles Times blog L.A. Now, the Associated Press and the Malibu Times. Kmiec is on leave from the law school.

Police say Kmiec’s 2009 Hyundai Accent left the road near Calabasas, going onto the dirt shoulder and striking a drainage ditch. Sister Mary Campbell, 74, died in the accident. Kmiec and the other passenger, Msgr. John Sheridan, 94, were airlifted to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for treatment, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. Sheridan is in critical but stable condition and Kmiec, 58, is in stable condition.

The group was on its way to the Our Lady of Malibu Catholic Church after an anniversary celebration at a high school, according to the Malibu Times.
