Announcing a new step forward in its strategic plan for Latin America, DLA Piper says it has formed an alliance with Campos Mello Advogados in Brazil. The firm currently has 60 professionals and is expected to expand in Sao Paulo soon.

“This arrangement is a great beginning for us in Latin America, but there is more to come in the near future,” says Francis Burch Jr., the firm’s global chairman, in a DLA Piper press release.

A Bloomberg article offers additional details.

Meanwhile, in other developments today, at least two other major law firms also are making headlines with new international offices.

K&L Gates is opening in a big way in Warsaw in two weeks, by acquiring the entire 38-attorney office of Hogan & Hartson, as discussed in an earlier ABAJournal.com post.

And Steptoe & Johnson opened an office in Beijing today, its first in Asia, reports the Am Law Daily.

It will be headed by longtime Washington, D.C., partner Eric Emerson, who focuses his practice on international trade. Former O’Melveny & Myers counsel Susan Munro is also moving from Shanghai to work with him there.

“The core of what we want to do is help Chinese companies go abroad,” Emerson tells the legal publication.
