Law Firm Swag Becomes More Socially Responsible
Law firm swag isn’t what it used to be.
The blog Above the Law got only four entries in its inaugural law firm swag contest showcasing the items given to entice law students to take jobs that are in shorter supply this year.
“Is law firm swag, like subsidized soda or staff attorney programs, another casualty of the recession?” the blog wonders. It noted some swag themes: Law firms are offering swag that is more environmentally conscious and socially responsible, and allowing the recipients more of a say in the items they receive.
The four entries are:
• The Dobrowski law firm in Houston, which gave its summer associates engraved iPods.
• K&L Gates, donating $20,000 to charity instead of swag. Students can compete in an online trivia game to determine which charity gets the money.
• Mayer Brown, which took its summer associates to Niketown, where they were allowed to design their own shoes.
• Perkins Coie, which planted a tree in the honor of all students receiving a callback.
The ABA Section of Environment, Energy and Resources is also a fan of tree planting. It has launched a “one million trees project” that calls on association members to plant one million trees across the United States in the next five years, according to a press release.
