Megafirm Greenberg Traurig is a known leader in lateral hiring.

And, despite economic concerns and cutbacks at many firms these days, the 1,750-lawyer firm has already snagged as many partners from other firms as it did in all of last year, reports the American Lawyer.

The firm’s latest notch on its belt came in news this week that the firm had enticed former Mayer Brown vice-chairman Paul Maher to move aboard. He’s launching a new London office for the firm with plans to challenge some BigLaw traditions.

With Maher and two other Mayer Brown lateral recruits, the number of partners hired since January sits at 45, just six away from the total lateral hiring in 2008, American Lawyer reports.

And it’s not looking as if the firm plans to slow hiring anytime soon. The goal is to grow that London office to 100 lawyers within three years.
