It sounds like it should be the plot of the latest Hollywood movie. But in fact it’s a real-life story in some of Los Angeles’ most elite neighborhoods: skilled burglars in ski masks are stealing from the homes of the rich and famous, evading security systems and sometimes taking entire safes.

So far this year they’ve gotten away with some $7 million in swag, reports the Los Angeles Times.

“These guys are a two-man hillside crime wave. They are quick-hit artists,” says Councilman Jack Weiss, a former federal prosecutor who has arranged a $50,000 city reward if the culprits are caught. “They are clearly knowledgeable and sophisticated. They are not hot prowlers, and they focus exclusively on homes that aren’t occupied.”
