A law blog reports that Kirkland & Ellis laid off at least 57 staff members on Friday, and a partner at the firm confirms that there were staff layoffs although he declines to say how many.

The layoffs were made “due to general economic conditions nationwide,” says a senior partner who spoke with the ABA Journal on condition that his name not be used. There were no attorney layoffs, he emphasizes.

According to the unconfirmed numbers provided by JD Journal, the 1,500-attorney firm laid off 30 staff members in its Chicago headquarters; 13 in Los Angeles; and 14 in San Francisco. There was no word from tipsters on any staff layoffs in Kirkland’s New York and Washington, D.C., offices.
