Justice Elena Kagan told a group of women judges on Friday that the U.S. Supreme Court is working hard, even though the justices are hearing fewer cases than in the past.

Kagan said she’s not sure why the court is hearing fewer cases, the Associated Press reports. The court hears about 75 cases a year, down from about 140 cases in the 1980s.

Kagan said the justices are accepting cases that present important national issues, according to the AP account. “It seems like we’re all working hard,” she said. “It’s not like we’re playing golf on Wednesday afternoons.”

Kagan spoke to the National Association of Women Judges at Harvard Law School.
