Justice Clarence Thomas will appear on 60 Minutes on Sept. 30 to publicize his new book, My Grandfather’s Son: A Memoir.

Thomas received a $1.5 million advance from HarperCollins for the book, which focuses on his childhood and ends with the battle over his 1991 confirmation, Legal Times reports. Some say the book contains explosive details about the controversial hearing, but another person who read the memoir said, “It’s really about his childhood, not gossip about the court.”

Thomas is appearing on the news show even though he eliminated a clause in the standard contract requiring him to make publicity appearances. Justices rarely make such appearances, the legal publication says. Sandra Day O’Connor went on Today to promote her memoir and was interviewed on 60 Minutes in 2004. Ruth Bader Ginsburg took viewers on a tour of her chambers for CBS News Sunday Morning.
